Being critical is the new following

If i may beleive research results there is a lack of critical school leavers we just need in our businesses. This is the result of a study from the 2032 Education Platform in 2016. This appears to be in contrast to what I expirence when walking on the streets, watching TV shows, or reading social media. Criticism or expression is everyday’s business. But i see a view differences.

My hometown is Utrecht (The Netherlands), i live less than 600 meters from the charming city center in a nice waterfront apartment. At the other site of the water is Utrecht quickly developing hip Asian restaurants, Berlin food cafes, a French-oriented wine shop and more and more restaurants. In my neighborhood, a nice neighborhood, I see the rise of the luminous letterbox.

When I walk from my apartment to elementary school, I come along at least 6 of these letterboxes. That’s how I know when “daddy” needed a trigger or compliment: “Daddy’s the bomb”, someone has been to a concert of The Toppers ( a dutch singing event): “Mama is a topper” 😉 and a child is 6 “Juulje is 6”. Imaginative as I am, I imagine all kinds of exciting stories that play behind the letterboxes. These are the forms of expression in my neighborhood. They are not political expressions or expressions that affect me personally. Instead, they allow me plenty of space to be able to fantasize in my neighborhood on the basis of all sorts of assumptions.

On tv and on social media and on websites it’s quite different. There the “color” of the broadcasting tv channel, website or newspaper taht will determine the tone. And thus the tone of criticism and the removal or adoption thereof.

However, I distinguish three criticisms (which also offcourse have an overlap):

Critical criticism: A neatly formulated critical note, sometimes even layered, with well-thought-out arguments, which has already gone through all the scenarios before publication. It has been written to determinate and undermine any kind of criticism. This is a sport where few are really good at and it’s determinating any kind off discussion.

A nice addition is that the accounts managed by individuals are divided into men and women respectively 59% and 41%. It is remarkable that men have placed 1,880 tweets on average and 2,933 women.

Unsupported criticism: Often coming from emotion, no study has been done before the criticism and one reacts to someone else, or the own believes. Without any study in advance you could say that there is a lot of assumption. I mostly see this in social media. Easily accessible to anyone to criticize and receive criticism.
However, the newly created twitter accounts have gone down by number drastically. Where 1 to 2 years ago more than 430,000 new Twitter accounts were created, the number of new accounts lasted 250,000 stakes last year. A nice commnet to add is that the accounts managed by individuals are divided into men and women respectively 59% and 41%. It is remarkable that men have placed 1,880 tweets on average and 2,933 women. Just think about that.

Feedback criticism: Direct criticism can be expressed from emotion, but not from unfounded assumption. The feedback critic is not anxious to express critical feedback without prior study and is open to receiving feedback. This criticism is about the content and is not a “criticism just to criticize”. I rarely see this feedback criticism. It is also called dialogue in the walkways. There is no black and white, no good or wrong, no left or right. Disagree is power and there is understanding and listening. Invest in the others yourself to grow. Every opinion counts.

When Social Media (technology) has become our new way of communicating people use twitter as a “transmitter” of their message. Is the twitter user with the most followers (this seems to be a goal) the user who has the most critics? Isn’t it true that the user with the most followers is now the biggest follower of the system itself?
